ENERGY STAR’s current sizing chart rates a 12,000 BTU room air conditioner for 450 to 550 square feet. The common “20 BTU per square foot” shortcut instead estimates 600 square feet for the same unit, about 8% more area than the official chart allows. Adjustments apply on top of that base figure: shaded rooms subtract 10%, sunny rooms add 10%, and kitchens add 4,000 BTU/hr.

area_sqft_range and btu_per_hour together define one ENERGY STAR chart tier; forward rows read square footage to find BTU, reverse rows read BTU (for the 8 common ratings requested: 5,000/6,000/8,000/10,000/12,000/14,000/18,000/24,000) to find square footage — both are the same underlying ENERGY STAR data, just indexed differently. rule_of_thumb rows recompute area for the same 8 BTU ratings using the popular '20 BTU per square foot' shortcut so the two methods can be compared directly; they disagree by roughly 8-45% depending on tier. adjustment rows are flat modifiers applied on top of the base forward-table BTU figure, not standalone area/BTU pairs.

Method

10+ targeted web searches (ENERGY STAR sizing chart, energy.gov guidance, ceiling-height and ACCA Manual J/S availability, the 20-BTU-per-square-foot rule's DOE attribution). Two ENERGY STAR PDFs render their sizing chart as an image, not extractable text, so both were re-fetched as binary attachments and transcribed directly with native PDF reading. Every candidate URL was fetched and verified before use; two dead energy.gov links surfaced by search were dropped rather than cited.

Gaps

  • Ceiling height — no ENERGY STAR or DOE source states a numeric adjustment. Contractor blogs claim roughly +10% capacity per foot above 8 ft, but that figure traces to no primary source and is excluded.
  • ACCA Manual J / Manual S — no publicly accessible primary source; the manuals are sold directly by ACCA, so no ACCA-sourced rows are included.
  • "20 BTU per square foot" — widely attributed to the Department of Energy by secondary sources, but no energy.gov page states this ratio; DOE's own page defers to ENERGY STAR's table instead. Sourced here to the general secondary convention, not to DOE.
  • 2003 vs. 2023 boundary — the 2003 ENERGY STAR flyer lists 14,000 BTU for "500 to 700 sq ft"; the current 2023 fact sheet lists "550 to 700 sq ft" for the same tier. Both are official and still hosted; the 2023 boundary is used in the forward/reverse rows.
